  1. Ad Hoc Database Manager version 1.10
  2.  
  3. This file contains information on the installation and use of Ad Hoc from
  4. ExLogica.  This is a SHAREWARE program.  Please read the licensing and
  5. registration information in the file LICENSE.TXT included with this package
  6. before using the program.  Additional information for Shareware vendors is in
  7. the file VENDOR.TXT.

  19. 1. Installation
  20. ================================================

  22. Ad Hoc is a Windows program.  It requires Microsoft Windows version 3.1 and 
  23. will take up about 3MB of disk space.  If you are installing Ad Hoc over a
  24. previous version, read the section "Installing over a previous version".
  25.  
  26. Installing from the ADHOC.ZIP distribution file
  27. ----------------------------------------------- 
  28. If you download Ad Hoc from an information service or bulletin board, it will
  29. be in a .ZIP file.  This file requires PKUNZIP version 2.04g or later to
  30. unzip it.  The files in this zip file must be unzipped into a subdirectory on
  31. your hard disk (c:\adhoc is suggested).  If you unzip using the PKUNZIP -d
  32. option, this subdirectory will be created automatically.  For example, if you
  33. have the ADHOC.ZIP file in a directory called C:\DOWNLOAD, enter the
  34. following command at the DOS prompt:
  35.  
  36.   pkunzip -d c:\download\adhoc.zip c:\
  37.  
  38. This will create a directory C:\ADHOC and unzip the files into it.  It will
  39. also create a subdirectory C:\ADHOC\SAMPLE which will contain a sample
  40. database.  To make the distribution file as small as possible, there is no
  41. separate setup program.  Ad Hoc will install itself the first time it is run.
  42.  
  43. Before you run Ad Hoc, you must run the DOS SHARE program (SHARE.EXE) found
  44. in the DOS directory.  Share adds file sharing extensions to DOS, and must be
  45. loaded before you start Windows.  For convenience, put a line in your
  46. AUTOEXEC.BAT file to load SHARE when you boot.
  47.  
  48. To start Ad Hoc the first time, from the Program Manager or File Manager,
  49. select the Run command on the File menu and enter the command
  50.  
  51.   c:\adhoc\adhoc
  52.  
  53. Ad Hoc will ask you if you want to create a program group for it in Program
  54. Manager and then make other installation settings.  This is only done once,
  55. from now on you can click on the Ad Hoc icon in Program Manager to start the
  56. program.

  58. Installing from Diskettes
  59. -------------------------
  60. If you are installing Ad Hoc from the distribution diskettes, you should have
  61. two diskettes, Disk 1 (Setup) and Disk 2.
  62.  
  63. Insert Disk 1 into drive A: or B:
  64.  
  65. From the Program Manager or the File Manager, select the Run command on the
  66. File menu and enter the command
  67.  
  68.   a:\setup  (or b:\setup)
  69.  
  70. The setup program will ask you for the directory on your hard disk that Ad
  71. Hoc will be installed into.  The default program directory name suggested is
  72. C:\ADHOC, but you can change it if necessary.  The setup program will install
  73. Ad Hoc and all of its support files into this directory.  This will allow you
  74. to easily remove Ad Hoc from your disk should you decide not to register the
  75. product.  Just delete all files in the ADHOC directory.

  77. Before running Ad Hoc, you must install the DOS SHARE driver (SHARE.EXE is
  78. located in the DOS directory..  This must be done before you run Windows (do
  79. not do it from a DOS window running under Windows).  To load share, at the
  80. DOS prompt, enter SHARE.  Then start Windows.  For convenience, put the SHARE
  81. command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. (If you start Windows in your AUTOEXEC,
  82. make sure the SHARE command is first.)

  84. Optional
  85. -------------------
  86. Ad Hoc uses several DLLs that may already be installed on your disk for other
  87. programs.  To save disk space, you can move these DLLs to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  88. directory for use by all programs.  Any DLLs that you copy to the
  89. WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory can be deleted from the ADHOC directory.  These DLLs
  90. are:

  92.   BC30RTL.DLL     Supports the Borland Objectwindows library used in Ad Hoc
  93.   OWL31.DLL        also
  94.   TCLASS31.DLL     also
  95.   BWCC.DLL        Borland Windows Custom Control library
  96.   WBTRCALL.DLL    Btrieve record manager from Novell, used in Ad Hoc
  97.  
  98.   DB.DLL is an Ad Hoc private library; there is no need to move it
  99.   AHUTIL.DLL is an AD Hoc library
  100.  
  101. IMPORTANT:  If you have several copies of a particular DLL on your disk, make
  102. sure that you put the latest copy (by file date)in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  103. directory before you delete the other copies.

  106. ================================================
  107. 2. Installing over a previous version
  108. ================================================
  109.  
  110. You should install Ad Hoc in the same directory as your previous version. 
  111. The new files will overwrite the old files, but if you want a clean
  112. installation, delete the old ADHOC directory first.  The new version of Ad
  113. Hoc is compatible with your existing databases.
  114.  
  115. The versions of Ad Hoc after the 1.00.27 beta version use a new report format
  116. that contains right and bottom margins for report elements.  Reports designed
  117. with older versions may have invalid values for these margins.  To check, you
  118. should run the Diagnostics procedure on all your reports (see Diagnostics in
  119. the Help system).  We suggest that you run diagnostics on your database(s)
  120. and all forms and lists as well.

  122. There are more configuration options in this version, and the options have
  123. been rearranged.  Check each option dialog to make sure the settings are the
  124. way you want them.

  128. 3. Installed Files

  131. After you install Ad Hoc, the program directory and sample database 
  132. directory should contain the files listed in the file FILES.TXT.  If you do
  133. not have all the program files, please contact ExLogica.

  137. 4. Changes Ad Hoc makes to your system
  138. ================================================

  140. When Ad Hoc is started, it looks for the file ADHOC.INI in its program
  141. directory (C:\ADHOC).  If it doesn't find it, it installs itself, making the
  142. following changes to your system:
  143.  
  144.   1. Creates ADHOC.INI in the Ad Hoc program directory with some initial 
  145.      initialization settings.  Don't delete this file or move it to another
  146.      directory.
  147.  
  148.   2. Adds the entry DDF=C:\ADHOC\ADHOC.EXE ^.DDF to the [Extensions] section
  149.      of WIN.INI.  This allows you to start Ad Hoc by clicking on a .DDF file
  150.      in the File Manager
  151.  
  152.   3. Adds the entry UniqueDOSPSP=true to the [386Enh] section of SYSTEM.INI
  153.      this is required for the proper operation of the database engine

  157. 5. Registering, Ordering Ad Hoc
  158. ================================================

  160. We hope you like Ad Hoc and will continue to use it after the 21-day
  161. evaluation period.  If you continue to use Ad Hoc after the evaluation
  162. period, you must register your copy and pay the registration fee to avoid
  163. being in violation of Federal copyright laws.

  167.   You will receive a registered copy of the product (without the
  168.   "Unregistered Copy" notices) and a printed copy of the User's Manual, when
  169.   it is available.

  174.   be notified of the availability of future updates.  The next version of the
  175.   software will contain enhancements not in the evaluation version.
